Optimising industrial hemp for skin care
Industrial hemp is a multi-purpose crop that produces:
- a seed oil with applications in food and personal care,
- shive which has growing markets in building materials and
- fibre for insulation, composites and textiles.
Industrial hemp has a wide variety of uses
In a collaborative venture between CNAP and Boots the Chemist the full composition of hemp oil was analysed rigorously using state-of-the-art equipment and specialised analytical techniques. The information from this analysis gave rise to a pipeline of new personal care products.

Hemp in building materials & insultation
Hemp in composites & textiles
The researchers also applied molecular fast track breeding techniques which produced lines of hemp with novel oil compositions. Once fully trialled and registered, these new hemp varieties will offer a significant increase in the range of oils produced in the UK for food, personal care and other applications.
